Suspect Packages started in 1996 as a small mail order catalogue to sell my ‘UK Hustlerz’ mixtapes, these tapes contained 100% homegrown Hip Hop releases and exclusive recordings.
At this time the tapes were a vital way of hearing the best UK Hip Hop, especially if you were outside the capital as often these releases would never turn up in your local record store.
During this time I got to know the artists personally, this was a very important aspect of what would become Suspect Packages. The demand for the tapes started to increase and were selling worldwide. With my growing contacts within the industry, the company grew and we started to sell other DJs mixtapes and then small amounts of vinyl.
By approaching the artists and labels directly we were able to grow the business into a catalogue (yes, paper) of releases. Suspect Packages was one of the very first record stores to appear online in the year 2000. This was extremely exciting as the internet was very new to us all (I’m showing my age!).
Suspect Packages is now the world’s longest running, and strictly 100% UK Hip Hop based retail website. Still going strong in 2020!
I’ve also been lucky enough to present the Suspect Packages Radio Show for 19 years, playing UK Hip Hop old and new. The show first started in 2001 on a pirate station, Itch FM in London, this continued for 8 years before taking this to the monthly show on Kane FM, and today from my own studio. You can catch this on mixcloud.com/suspectpackages every month. Please lock on!
I’m still DJin’ out at numerous clubs and bars up and down the country, and festivals such as Glastonbury, Boomtown and Outlook, and yes, from vinyl too! My love for Hip Hop continues, I’m also passionate about Reggae, Jungle, Drum & Bass, House, Funk, Soul, Disco & Jazz.
I also run The Vinyl Workshop ‘DJ Lessons For All Ages And Stages’, giving back my love of music, vinyl and deejaying.
